Pesantren As An Ecosystem Of Religious Moderation: Tradition, Authority, And Social Transformation

Pesantren are indigenous Indonesian Islamic educational institutions that function not only as spaces for the transmission of religious knowledge but also as arenas for the reproduction of tradition, the formation of religious authority, and the articulation of social change. Amid increasing religious complexity, social polarization, and the growing penetration of modernity and digital technology, pesantren face the challenge of maintaining continuity with their traditions while developing moderate and responsive religious practices. This study aims to analyze pesantren as ecosystems of religious moderation by examining the interrelationship between Islamic scholarly traditions, kiai authority, educational processes, and social transformation. The study employs a qualitative approach using library research and content analysis of academic literature on pesantren, religious moderation, religious authority, and social transformation. The findings indicate that religious moderation in pesantren does not develop linearly or solely through formal curricula; rather, it emerges through an ecosystem that integrates the study of classical Islamic texts, kiai role modeling, pesantren culture, practices of tolerance, cultural literacy, and social engagement. Tradition functions as a foundation for the legitimation of values, kiai authority serves as a pedagogical and moral mechanism, while social transformation provides a space for actualizing the values of moderation in community life. Theoretically, this study contributes to conceptualizing pesantren as dynamic, dialogical, and transformative ecosystems of religious moderation. Practically, it provides a framework for strengthening moderation education through locally rooted traditions, adaptive religious authority, and social empowerment.
